Thought Cloud - Woven Glyphs

2020 • monofilament, wool • Gallery Maronié, Kyoto

Following my research into ancient, untranslatable writing systems, I began to create an original pictograph system. In the same way that Cuneiform glyphs were characterized by the wedge stylus and Chinese calligraphy has been shaped by the brush, I wanted to make symbols made to be woven.

Consisting of over 50 panels, these were completely woven (not embroidered) by hand on a tiny table loom during the spring and summer quarantine of 2020. By working on this small, modular scale, I ended up developing a method for using slippery monofilament as a warp thread.

While I designed the woven glyphs with specific meanings in mind, I’ve found that allowing viewers to tell me the what they see is much more fun for both parties. I plan to collect these viewer answers in the future. (Please stay tuned!)
